Europe’s economy will receive a modest boost from the German-led rise in defence spending over the next couple of years. The bigger question is whether it is the start of a move towards creating a self-sufficient European defence sector. This would have far larger effects on both Europe’s growth prospects and its geopolitical position. However, there are big question marks over whether Europe has the means and commitment to undertake the extra spending and sustained co-operation that this would require.
